“What’s love got to do, got to do with it?” — Tina Turner

If you’re reading this, I’m willing to bet you know that song. Whether it’s the original version, or the rendition by Fat Joe and Ashanti (NFSW, open with discretion). These songs revolve around the idea that love does not have to be motivation for performing certain actions.

For example, let’s look at employment. There are persons working jobs that they either hate or are disinterested in because they need the income to survive. What does love have to do with earning a paycheck? Nothing. On the flip side, there are those fortunate enough to earn money doing something they love and are passionate about. I fall into the latter category, but it’s not always milk and honey on this side.

“Choose a job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life?” — Confucius. Confucius might have been right about that, but what happens when love starts to run dry? We’re humans, and as such we crave novelty. The passion we feel about that new car, that new adventure, that new job eventually dissipates. And there’s no shame in that. It’s this curiosity for novelty which drove our evolution and innovation. This same instinct that led to the modern enjoyments that we indulge in.

Personally, I’ve felt this throughout my career. How can we replenish the passion when the well starts to run dry? I’m going to share with you tips that I’ve used to rejuvenate my fervor.

Challenge yourself at work

Remember the excitement you felt as a child for new experiences? Your first steps, first day of school, first kiss, and first love. Now compare that to your job. You probably felt enthusiastic about starting in a new environment, meeting co-workers, and learning your role. The novelty made everything fresh and exciting, even the food in the cafeteria.

But after some time, the novelty wears off and routine sets in. You may start feeling bored with your job. Your brain craves new experiences, just like you’d stop playing a video game if all levels were the same or you wouldn’t see muscle growth by only lifting within your comfort zone at the gym.

If you’re feeling this way, try the following:

  • Ask for new projects and tasks
  • Look for alternative solutions and improvements for solved problems
  • Automate tasks where possible
  • Shadow someone in a different department.

Continue Learning

One of the key ways to replenish your passion for your career is by constantly learning new things. This could be in the form of taking up new courses, attending workshops or conferences, or even pursuing a new hobby. By expanding your knowledge base and acquiring new skills, you bring fresh perspectives to your work and keep it from becoming stale.

Furthermore, your newly acquired skills can lead to new sources of income that enhance your current career. This might involve taking on freelance projects, starting a side venture, or pursuing creative endeavors that align with your interests. By diversifying your portfolio, you add a fresh dimension to your career and reignite your passion.

Teach others

Teaching others can be a great way to deepen your understanding of a subject and revive your passion for it. When you share your knowledge and help someone else learn, you reinforce your own understanding and can identify areas that you need to improve in. Additionally, the act of teaching can be incredibly rewarding as you see someone grow and achieve their goals. Whether you’re coaching a colleague, mentoring a young person, or giving a presentation to a group, sharing your expertise can be a powerful way to reignite your passion for your career.

Take a break

Taking a break from your career can be a great way to replenish your passion and energy. Whether it’s a long vacation, a sabbatical, or simply a mental health day, taking time away from your work can provide perspective, reduce stress, and give you a renewed sense of purpose. When you come back from your break, you’ll be refreshed, recharged, and ready to tackle your work with renewed vigor. Additionally, taking breaks gives you the opportunity to explore new interests, spend time with loved ones, and find new sources of inspiration. So don’t be afraid to take a step back from time to time and give yourself the break you deserve.

Leave

Leaving a job can be a difficult decision, but it can also be a necessary step in rekindling your passion for work. Sometimes, a change of environment or a new challenge is exactly what you need to reignite your drive. It’s important to assess your current situation and determine if a job change is the best option for you. If you decide to make a move, approach it with a positive mindset and a clear vision for what you hope to achieve. Remember that it’s never too late to follow your dreams and pursue a career that brings you fulfillment and satisfaction.

In conclusion, it’s important to remember that while love may play a role in our personal lives, it doesn’t always have to dictate our career choices. Just as the classic song “What’s Love Got to Do with It” emphasizes, love and passion can sometimes be separate entities. However, by taking steps to reignite your passion, whether through learning new skills, teaching others, taking a break, or even leaving your job, you can find new purpose and fulfillment in your career. The key is to be proactive and make intentional changes to keep the fire burning. By doing so, you can cultivate a fulfilling and meaningful career that brings joy and satisfaction to your life.
